A TASTE OF MISSIONS BY SIS. AMY BOYER

 A NEW OPENING
BY BRO. SHANE BOYER

Enthusiasm and enticing aromas intensified in the F.G.B.I. cafeteria as students and faculty organized the annual international buffet. To present an opportunity for everyone to venture into the practices of other cultures, both international and American students prepared dishes authentic to various nations.

Dressed in authentic Indian garb, senior, Tyler Luck said, “It helped me relate to the international students.”
Hunger pangs assaulted many as they entered the cafeteria, immediately catching a whiff of fried fish, hot curry, tangy chicken and spicy marinara. Having spent time in the Philippines last summer doing missions work, junior, Trynda Henson, who cooked Chicken Adobo, reported feeling, “scared because I didn’t know how it would turn out.” After receiving many compliments, however, she concluded that it “must have tasted just like it did in the Philippines.”
Ravenous appetites were finally satisfied by twenty-five feet of tables laden down with so much food it could not possibly fit on a plate
.
After each chef explained the proper methods of eating their particular delicacy, everyone feasted on the fine cuisine. Geraldine Fombah helped prepare Tilapia with Moses Ngungu who said, Indian Chicken Curry by Nelson Paul. Click to enlarge.“It was intimidating; I didn’t know if people would like my food. It was a privilege to allow American students to taste our food from home.” His fears were unfounded, however, as many commented on enjoying the fish.
As always, everyone involved appreciated the thrilling occasion to “live” in another culture. Two young ladies in foreign dress. It also served to strengthen the passion in some to work in those countries in the future.

What could you do with five thousand dollars? The Alumni Association was able to complete another major accomplishment by purchasing four sets of double-hung New doors Click to enlargedoors for the girl’s dorm AND had them installed for under $5,000.00. Original estimates for the job were over $2,300.00 per set of doors! They were purchased in Ohio, brought here and installed by Bros. Harold Bruce and Tim Leonard. These men labored for two  days, starting early in the morning and working into the night, removing the old doors and installing the new ones. The doors that were there had served their purpose and time well. The new double-pane doors with weather stripping are an efficient solution to the heat loss that is normally experienced due to the aging doors.
The Alumni Association would like to thank those who have already given to the project. The Association has received $4,200.00 toward our goal of $5,000.00.
If you have a pledge that you have not paid please send it in, as we  still have need for $800.00 to cover the remaining expenses.
The Alumni Association would especially like to thank Rev. Jack Walker for taking this project on as if it were his own.

Since coming to to FGBI I realize that there is more to the  world than our personal four walls of contentment. I understand now that there is truly a great work to be done, and have found a greater burden to do that work.
