| A TASTE OF MISSIONS BY SIS. AMY BOYER |
A NEW OPENING |
||
Enthusiasm and enticing aromas intensified in the F.G.B.I. cafeteria as
students and faculty organized the annual international buffet. To present
an opportunity for everyone to venture into the practices of other
cultures, both international and American students prepared dishes
authentic to various nations.
Brightly colored garments dotted the scene as many individuals were
granted the exciting prospect of donning costumes true to various
international customs. Dressed in authentic Indian garb, senior, Tyler
Luck said, “It helped me relate to the international students.” Hunger pangs assaulted many as they entered the cafeteria, immediately catching a whiff of fried fish, hot curry, tangy chicken and spicy marinara. Having spent time in the Philippines last summer doing missions work, junior, Trynda Henson, who cooked Chicken Adobo, reported feeling, “scared because I didn’t know how it would turn out.” After receiving many compliments, however, she concluded that it “must have tasted just like it did in the Philippines.” Ravenous appetites were finally satisfied by twenty-five feet of tables laden down with so much food it could not possibly fit on a plate. |
After each chef explained
the proper methods of eating their particular delicacy, everyone feasted
on the fine cuisine. Geraldine Fombah helped prepare Tilapia with Moses
Ngungu who said,
As always, everyone involved appreciated the thrilling occasion to “live” in another culture.
The samples of many ethnic dishes and opportunity to dress in
international clothing presented an awareness of the many societies and
their individual needs. It also served to strengthen the passion in some
to work in those countries in the future. |
